Course Features

Description

This course is designed to teach spine surgeons to recognise and manage the different complications that can commonly occur during anterior thoracic and lumbar spine approaches, and which require knowledge related to other surgical specialties such as general surgery, vascular surgery, urology and thoracic surgery. Vascular, general, urological and thoracic specialists will offer participants the opportunity for supervised live tissue training on anaesthetised pigs.
This course does not have any sections.

Goals

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the benefits, risks and limitations of the different approaches to the spine: anterior, lateral, posterior oblique, percutaneous.
  • Know the tricks and errors of anterior thoracic and lumbar spine approaches.
  • Perform experimental surgery on live tissue:
    • Identification of structures and strategies to avoid damage to the viscera.
    • Practical handling of the vasculature, intestine, ureters, lungs, diaphragm and oesophagus.
    • Repair vascular, intestinal, ureteral, pulmonary, diaphragmatic and oesophageal injuries.

Course details

A theoretical introduction will be followed by a 6-hour session of surgery on live porcine tissue, with a ratio of 2 participants to 1 table instructor, in addition to the assistance of operating theatre staff.

Participants will experience the following manoeuvres:

  • Anterior abdominal approach:
    • Arterial and venous injury management and repair
    • Abdominal visceral injury management and repair
    • Management and repair of ureteral injury
    • Abdominal wall reconstruction
  • Anterior thoracic approach:
    • Thoracic-phrenic approach-laparatomy
    • Diaphragmatic, pleural and pulmonary repair and management
    • Oesophageal management and repair
    • Thoracic wall reconstruction and drainage
