Workshop on thoracic procedures in animal models for emergency doctors. Pleural drains and central venous lines

Course Features

Description

In a Emergency Service, a large number of patients suffer from pleuro-pulmonary complications of varying degrees of complexity or urgency. Many of these require pleural drainage as initial treatment. This medical-surgical procedure - apparently simple and accessible to any physician - is not free of complications. For this reason, its proper indication and correct technique are crucial to resolve various thoracic pathologies, especially in emergency cases. Both drainage and its subsequent management should not be exclusive to thoracic surgeons, as they are not present in all hospitals. We believe that most specialists related to emergency and respiratory pathology should be familiar with this technique and its care in order to provide a better quality of care to our patients. For this purpose, we have designed a practical course, which aims to emphasise the indications for pleural drainage, the different placement techniques, the main instruments and devices for the management of drains and their complications.

We believe that the porcine model is suitable for training in the placement of pleural drains of different types, with control of the performance using the thoracoscope. In addition, it is suitable for the practice of central venous line placement, allowing maximum use to be made of this animal model.

This course does not have any sections.

Goals

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

  • To contribute through training to increase efficiency in the treatment of pleuro-pulmonary emergencies.
  • To develop practical skills in different pleural drainage techniques and their postoperative care.
  • To develop practical skills in the placement of central venous lines and their aftercare.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To consolidate practical knowledge of the surgical procedures listed below:

  • To consolidate theoretical knowledge of the main pleural pathologies.
  • To understand the anatomical and physiological basics of pleural drainage and suction systems.
  • To learn the different pleural drainage techniques, the necessary instruments and the correct technique for their placement.
  • Incorporate knowledge of the possible complications of pleural drains to facilitate their early identification.
  • Practise different pleural drainage techniques, as well as the handling of the related instruments, valve systems and suction systems.
  • Incorporate clear guidelines in relation to the care, transport of patients with pleural drains and their unblocking, mobilisation and removal.
  • Practise percutaneous placement of central venous lines.
