Complex cervicothoracic surgical procedures using cadaveric models. International course

07/10/2027 · 08/10/2027
Places available: 15
Teaching hours: 17,5

A highly practical course focused on performing complex surgical procedures in the cervicothoracic region and the mediastinum. The program includes anterior and transmanubral approaches, laryngotracheal dissection and resection, osteosynthesis techniques, and the use of myocutaneous flaps, among others. These techniques are applicable to the treatment of both traumatic injuries and tumors affecting the cervicothoracic junction.

In addition, we propose performing a mediastinal tracheotomy, which, although an extremely rare procedure, provides a comprehensive surgical experience involving complex dissection of the trachea, the chest wall, and the mediastinum.

From an educational, ethical, and legal perspective, cadaveric models provide an ideal setting for practicing these techniques, in which surgical anatomy plays a fundamental role.

To clarify, the goal of this course is not to teach surgical techniques, but rather to provide the resources, a structured framework, and the opportunity to practice complex surgical maneuvers, while exchanging experiences and knowledge that will enrich the surgical experience.

To complement the hands-on training, participants will be provided with access to a selection of instructional videos demonstrating the surgical procedures that will be performed during the course. These materials are designed to facilitate pre-course preparation and reinforce understanding of the anatomy and procedural steps, thereby optimizing the hands-on learning experience using human specimens.

Course objectives

General Objectives

• Consolidate theoretical and practical knowledge related to complex approaches and procedures in the cervicothoracic and laryngotracheal regions.

• Develop practical skills in complex and rare surgical techniques and procedures using human cadaver models for training

Specific goals

To reinforce theoretical and practical knowledge of the following surgical procedures:

1. Tracheal and laryngotracheal resections, and mediastinal tracheotomy.

2. Surgical approach to upper thoracic inlet and anterior Pancoast tumors.

3. Transmanubral and cervicomediastinal approaches for elective and emergency surgery.

4. Pedicled myocutaneous flap from the pectoralis major muscle.

5. Osteosynthesis of the ribs and sternum.

Attendees

Senior and junior attending thoracic surgeons and residents (4th and 5th year) in Thoracic Surgery or Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Our aim is to attract both experienced surgeons and younger colleagues, including residents. Each surgical team will have the opportunity to perform all procedures according to a structured program designed to closely simulate real-world surgical practice. Procedures will be assigned to senior surgeons, junior staff, and residents based on their level of complexity.
