Management of Complications in Anterior Thoracic and Abdominal Approach to the Spine. In Vivo Workshop on Pig Model – 8th ed.
This course takes a cross-disciplinary approach to teaching spine surgeons how to recognize and manage the various complications that commonly arise during anterior approaches to the thoracic and lumbar spine, which require knowledge of other surgical specialties such as general surgery, vascular surgery, urology, and thoracic surgery.
Vascular, general, urological, and thoracic specialists will offer participants the opportunity to undergo supervised training on living tissue in anesthetized pigs.
There will be a theoretical introduction followed by a 6-hour surgery session on an anesthetized animal (pig), with a ratio of 2 participants to 1 table instructor, in addition to the assistance of operating room staff.
Participants will perform the following maneuvers:
- Anterior abdominal approach:
- Management and repair of arterial and venous injury
- Management and repair of abdominal visceral injury
- Management and repair of ureteral injury
- Abdominal wall reconstruction
- Anterior thoracic approach:
- Thoraco-phreno-laparotomy approach
- Management and repair of diaphragmatic, pleural, and pulmonary injuries
- Management and repair of esophageal injury
- Thoracic wall reconstruction and drainage
Fee: 2,000 €
Course objectives
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Understand the benefits and risks inherent to the possible spinal approach routes: anterior, lateral, posterior oblique, percutaneous, as well as their limitations.
- Know the tips and common pitfalls of anterior approaches to the thoracic and lumbar spine.
- Perform experimental surgery on live tissue to learn how to:
- Identify key anatomical structures and strategies to avoid injury to vital organs.
- Hands-on management of vascular, intestinal, ureteral, pulmonary, diaphragmatic, and esophageal structures.
- Demonstrate practical competence in the repair of vascular, intestinal, ureteral, pulmonary, diaphragmatic, and esophageal injuries.
